What is HYLA Wellness?
Jeffrey Lambert-Shemo, ATC, LAT
Founder, HYLA Wellness
Movement has the power to change lives.
For nearly 30 years, I've helped people overcome pain, recover from injury, improve performance, and rediscover confidence in their bodies. My career has taken me from professional sports and NCAA Division I athletics to outpatient rehabilitation, endurance events, and private practice, but one belief has remained constant: every person deserves to move well.
As a Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer, I've had the privilege of caring for professional football players, professional soccer athletes, NBA officials, collegiate athletes, weekend warriors, runners, and individuals who simply want to walk, work, or play without pain. While my experience includes elite athletics, my passion has always been helping people of every ability move more efficiently, confidently, and comfortably.
I founded HYLA Wellness to bring sports medicine beyond the sidelines. Traditional healthcare often focuses on treating injuries after they occur. HYLA Wellness focuses on understanding why they happen in the first place. By combining movement assessment, gait analysis, manual therapy, strength development, recovery strategies, education, and individualized coaching, I help clients build resilient bodies that support the lives they want to live.
Running is one of my specialties because it provides an incredible window into human movement, but my work extends far beyond runners. Whether someone is training for a marathon, recovering from surgery, chasing grandchildren, returning to hiking, or simply trying to stay active as they age, the goal is the same: move better, hurt less, and enjoy life more.
I believe the body is remarkably adaptable when given the right environment. Lasting improvement doesn't come from chasing symptoms—it comes from understanding movement, building strength, and creating sustainable habits that support long-term health.
At HYLA Wellness, my mission is simple: help people move with confidence so they can live with confidence.
My Story
I am a middle-aged father of three with a 27+ year career as a Certified and Licensed Athletic Trainer. Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working with athletes—from youth and high school teams to collegiate, professional, and even Olympic competitors. Today, my passion is to share my research and experience in health, injury, rehabilitation, and performance to help you increase your healthspan and achieve a balanced, vibrant lifestyle—what I call “Healthstyle.”
My personal journey in health and fitness has been diverse and evolving. I played youth sports, competed in high school and college lacrosse, experimented with long-distance running, stayed active at the YMCA in Lakewood, Ohio, and both trained and coached at CrossFit Cleveland. In 2020, during the pandemic, I discovered ultrarunning. Even with my history activity, in my 40s, my health took unexpected turns. I faced anxiety, a loss of desire to exercise, had several ER visits for chest pains, panic attacks, and even a kidney stone and gall stone simultaneously.
By 2024, I reached a crossroads. I realized I needed a change—an approachable, accessible and measurable one. Although I had completed three ultramarathons by July 2024, and considered myself relatively healthy, I knew deeper changes were needed. On July 16th, 2024, I embarked on a new journey as an alcohol-free athlete, father, and professional. I wanted to tackle issues like anxiety, a genetically high LPa, esophageal disease from a hiatal hernia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low energy, and increased weight—all while striving to become a more capable ultrarunner. For over 20 years, alcohol had been my signal that the workday was done and it was time to relax. But over time, it took more and more to achieve that relaxation, and I found I couldn’t control my drinking without a radical change.
Fast forward seven months: with the help of supportive meetings, extensive journaling, counseling, and a personalized plan based on my own research and experience, I am now healthier and happier. My blood work is excellent, I’ve completed another ultramarathon, and I’ve embraced a new Healthstyle that’s setting the course for my future
Today I‘m just at the beginning of my journey. I have decided to follow my passion and heart and share my knowledge to help others embrace their own Healthstyle journey and transform their lives. My personal journey sparked the creation of HYLA Wellness.
